The Courage to Shine: Lean Into Discomfort

March 18, 2026 //  by Tracy Baranauskas//  Leave a Comment

Life Coaching Tip: Growth requires courage—and more often than not, it asks us to step straight into discomfort. The path to a bigger, more fulfilling life isn’t about avoiding fear, but learning how to move forward alongside it. Recently, a powerful moment with one of my clients reminded me just how transformative it can be when we choose to lean in instead of hold back. I’m sharing it with you today as an invitation to stop playing small, trust what’s calling you forward, and allow yourself to truly shine.

One of the habits I encourage with the members of my Shine On Program is to record their wins daily, and some of the group members email me their wins for added accountability and celebration.

Well, last Friday morning, this is the message that was at the bottom of one of those emails:

“I know I figured all this out myself: Losing the weight, paying off the mountain of soul-crushing debt (well, it was crushing my soul), but I am 100% confident I would not have grown into the person to take these steps without Shine On, and your faith in me. Thank you SO FREAKING MUCH!”

My friend, did this ever warm my heart! Moments like this are one of the reasons I love the work I do so much.

I’m sharing it with you today not to be boastful (because eeeewww), but in hopes of inspiring you, as it did me.

You see, when I read this client’s wins this week (which were huge), I thought: I need to save this email. Not just because I’m proud of her, but because it’s a reminder of the impact of my work. Something I can revisit in those inevitable moments of self-doubt, fear, or insecurity so I can get out of my own head and reconnect with the bigger picture.

Sometimes my clients and others are surprised to hear I have such moments. But the truth is, it is impossible to live in transformation and not feel fear. I will always be someone who is driven to grow and uplevel in all the ways, so of course my primal brain gets rattled sometimes.

The difference now is I have mindset strategies to rein it in before it goes fully rogue.

One thought that always helps me is remembering how important it is that I allow myself to shine. It’s literally my life’s work: helping women to shine.

I feel so passionately about this because women in our culture are conditioned to do the opposite—to stay busy and productive, take care of others, and do, do, do . . . all while keeping themselves small and taking up as little space as possible. This position is diametrically opposed to fulfillment.

It can feel both countercultural and uncomfortable for us to shine. But I know that when we do, not only are our own lives richer and fuller, but the whole world benefits. My client’s email message is an example of that.

As I mentioned last week, if I expect my clients to do the uncomfortable work, then I must walk the walk, too.

But the truth is, shining doesn’t always feel easy for me either.

Twelve years ago, after getting fired from my job, my confidence had hit an all-time low. In those early years as a coach, part of me wanted to shrink and definitely not shine.

I had to use the very mindset tools I now teach my clients and lean into the discomfort. I mean, who would want to work with a life coach who hides from the world?

And since then, there have been plenty of seasons of challenge—failures, mistakes, losses, and heartache.

But when I see the impact of this work and the transformation of the women I coach, it reminds me that every hard step was worth it.

Because stretching outside our comfort zone in our careers, businesses, relationships, and lifestyle takes courage.

But it’s also when we feel the most alive.

By feeling the fear . . . and doing it anyway.

I think of the client who sent me that email—her strength, audacity, and resilience absolutely blow me away.

I remember her initial consultation call with me in the fall of 2024. She was already accomplished, but she wanted more for her life.

At the same time, she felt conflicted.

Although she truly wanted change, she was scared. Scared of the time commitment, scared of the investment, and worried—what if it doesn’t work?

Part of her believed what she wanted to achieve might even be impossible.

But another part of her—the deeper, wiser part—knew she was capable of so much more.

Her soul never let her down.

So, she courageously took the leap. She went all in.

And look at her now.

As soon as she made the commitment, she eagerly dove into the work. She’s stretched and grown in so many ways. She’s become a more confident version of herself who understands her worth and allows herself to shine.

She’s nailed her health and financial goals, boldly pursued what she wants professionally, and expanded her belief in what’s possible for her life.

She wrote in her wins last week:

“It seemed an impossible dream two years ago, and now it’s falling together easily. WTAF?”

I am thrilled to the tips of my toes that she’s stepped into her power and is allowing herself to brightly shine.

Now, let’s talk about you, my friend.

Are you keeping yourself small even though you know you are meant to do something bigger—something more meaningful and fulfilling?

Are there things you know will propel you forward, but fear is holding you back?

Fear will always be part of the journey of upleveling, my friend. And that’s okay. It will always be with us on the bus—but it never, ever gets to drive.

Lean into the discomfort and courageously take that step forward.

The dream is in your heart for a reason.

You have just one precious life, sister.

It’s time to allow yourself to shine!
