Life Coaching Tip: Ever feel like you’ve run out of ideas or hit a wall in your personal or professional growth? In this inspiring story, I share a real-life coaching moment with my client Renee, who went from feeling completely stuck to landing a promotion—all by shifting her mindset and expanding her mental capacity. It’s a powerful reminder that our brains are capable of far more than we give them credit for, and sometimes the only thing standing between us and our next opportunity is the belief that we can figure it out. If you’re feeling overwhelmed or blocked, this story is for you. Read on to learn how a few simple mental shifts can lead to real, life-changing results.
______________
My client, Renee, is amazing. She’s a shimmering ray of sunshine who lives life on her own terms—creative, unique, and full of badassery!
As you might imagine, I adore Renee and feel honored to be her mindset coach.
And also, as you might imagine, Renee has a human brain that does what human brains do: create fear, resistance, and overwhelm any ole time we even think about the idea of change.
That’s exactly what was happening a few weeks ago during one of our coaching sessions. Renee was feeling stuck and frustrated in her job search—the needle didn’t seem to be moving, and there were no promising prospects in sight.
She asked me to brainstorm ideas with her because she felt she had run out of them. But I assured Renee that simply could not be true. Her mind is capable of producing an infinite number of ideas, each one more brilliant than the last.
Still, Renee wasn’t having it. When I asked her to come up with just three new ideas on the call, she folded her arms, shook her head, and flat-out refused.
“I am out of ideas,” she said. “I literally don’t know what to say. I’ve done everything I can think of doing. I’ve got nothing.”
Renee was frustrated, maybe a little annoyed with me. But because she’s also a great sport—and always willing to stretch her mind—she agreed to give it a shot.
And wouldn’t you know it? Once she directed her brain there, she came up with three new ideas. Were they perfect? No. Was she thrilled about any of them? Also no.
But she did say, “Let me sleep on it and see what I come up with tomorrow.”
“Splendid,” I told her. “You can trust yourself, sister!”
The next day, Renee reached out with something new. “It suddenly occurred to me,” she said. “What if I ask my current boss for a new title—one that matches the role I want to grow into?”
So, she asked him. And he told her he’d think it over and give her an answer the next day.
Umm… how magnificent was that idea?! And from someone who had just believed she was fresh out of ideas!
During our Shine On meeting the next day, Renee shared her story with the group. She said that she’d be meeting with her boss that afternoon and would update us afterward in our online community.
And this is where the story gets juicy!
Later that day, Renee posted an update that started with “Holy Cow!” Not only did her boss agree to the new title—he gave her the actual promotion that came with it. Title, responsibilities, everything.
This is a true story. And my heart is so full writing about it.
I couldn’t be happier for Renee—who absolutely deserves this opportunity that she created for herself.
And it all started with her willingness to expand her mental capacity and redirect her brain to work for her instead of against her.
If you can relate to Renee’s story, then I encourage you to follow her lead. Decide to open your mind and increase your own mental capacity.
Because when you do that, you become fully empowered to use your brain at its highest level—to learn, troubleshoot, problem-solve, and access your intuition and resourcefulness.
Stay with me here if you often find yourself saying:
- “I don’t know.”
- “It’s too complicated.”
- “I can’t figure it out.”
- “It’s not working.”
- “I’m out of ideas.”
- “I’m not an expert.”
- Others know more/better.”
- “I’ve tried everything.”
Begin by asking yourself:
- What do I know?
- Where can I start?
- How can I figure this out?
Then, offer your brain some new Power Up Thoughts—especially if you are still feeling incapable and are doubting yourself.
Here are some of my favorites:
- I can figure this out.
- I want to figure this out.
- I am capable of understanding this.
- I know more than I think.
- I know exactly how to handle this.
- I’m a fast learner.
- I know this…
- I am willing to get started without all the information.
- I can start here…
- If it’s meant for me, I cannot miss it.
- I know what I’m doing.
- There’s always a way.
- All the thoughts and information I need are at the forefront of my mind.
- Everything that comes to my mind is brilliant.
- My brain just naturally knows how to do this.
- If it comes to me or through me, it’s genius.
If you’re feeling stuck right now, remember Renee’s story. You are never truly “out of ideas”—creative thoughts and ideas are right there; you just must be open to inviting them in.
You’ve got this, my sister! And your next opportunity might be just one Power Up Thought away!
