Life Coaching Tip: Mindset work really isn’t magic or complicated—and it’s the same for most anyone with a human brain. Our thoughts generate our emotions that drive our actions that create our results. One thought shift can radically change everything! But the caveat is that it can be difficult to identify our own limiting beliefs because they can feel like facts to us. This is where working with a coach can be helpful.
______________
Back in 2014, a few months before I found myself abruptly unemployed and shaken to my core, my daughter, Marissa, gave me a special gift — three pieces of wall art that she’d created for inspiration.
These pieces hung just above our bistro table in a nook where I often worked. And sister, they served as a lifeline during some of my darkest days that followed.
It was a brutally cold winter that year, and I felt incredibly isolated and lonely. Trying to build a coaching practice from that place was a struggle—but the wisdom of the words on that wall kept me going!
One featured the Mother Teresa poem, “Do It Anyway,” and another carried James Baldwin’s powerful words, “Those who say it can’t be done are usually interrupted by others doing it.”
The third piece highlighted a quote by Henry Ford, “Whether you think you can, or think you can’t, you’re right.” And this is the one I want to talk about today.
It’s the sentiment on that piece that made reading these quotes so powerful. It was a great reminder of what I already knew deep down—it’s our thoughts that create our results.
If I wanted to successfully build my coaching business, I had to work on what I was telling myself. Every. Single. Day.
The problem? My inner dialogue was far from supportive.
My predominant thoughts sounded something like this:
- No one is ever going to hire a life coach who can’t get their shit together.
- Your confidence is in the tube. How can you possibly help anyone else?
- You don’t know the first thing about building a business.
- People will laugh at the audacity of your dream. It will be so embarrassing to fail AGAIN in front of others!
- You suck.
And how did I feel when these thoughts came up for me throughout my day?
Just how you might imagine: hopeless, shameful, defeated, fearful, and powerless.
These were definitely not emotions that motivated me to do anything other than to go back to bed and pull the covers over my head!
But Henry Ford’s words kept echoing in my mind, and I felt empowered to make some changes.
Slowly, I began shifting my mindset. I practiced new thoughts, and I repeated them to myself over and over and over again.
These thoughts sounded something like this:
- I am determined to get my shit together and improve confidence!
- I will build my coaching practice with one client at a time.
- There is nothing I can’t learn. If other people can do it, so can I.
- I am smart, tenacious, and brave. I have a history of getting myself back up, no matter what!
- I approve of myself.
- This dream is in my heart for a reason.
- The Universe has my back!
I repeated these thoughts to myself during my early morning walks by the lake (yes, I was THAT person talking to myself as I marched around the park, lol).
And do you know what happened? New emotions were ignited. I began to feel inspired, energized, and empowered to build and grow my business!
It was these emotions that sparked the actions that helped me to do just that! Thanks to my new enthusiasm, I got to work, and I did all the uncomfortable things that felt slightly less daunting (and dare I say, fun?).
The rest, as they say, is history. But the mindset work? That never stops.
I still practice it daily, just as I encourage my clients to do. Because as we expand and uplevel our lives, it is natural for new limiting thoughts and fears to come flooding in.
And they can be debilitating, unless we do the work to redirect our mind to thoughts that serve us.
It really isn’t magic or complicated—and it works the same for most anyone with a human brain.
Our thoughts generate our emotions that drive our actions that create our results.
Truly, it’s that simple.
The caveat? Identifying limiting thoughts can be tricky because they often feel like facts to us, especially when our brains are stuck in a cycle of confirmation bias. It can be hard to believe they can be changed.
But that’s where mindset coaching comes in. My BS detector is always turned on, and I am skilled at helping you not only identify the thoughts that aren’t serving you but shifting them to work in your favor.
Just like with my own transformation, one thought shift can radically change everything.
