Life Coaching Tip: It’s easy to become so focused on the hustle and grind of life that we miss out on the magic and beauty all around us. This little story is a reminder to pause, be present, and take in the splendor. Don’t get so absorbed in your mission that you miss out on the things that bring you the most joy!

During a stretch of unseasonably mild December weather, Jerry and I made it a practice to enjoy extra-long walks along the beach shore—such a delightful, winter treat!
One Saturday morning, we had our eyes laser-focused on the shoreline as the waves rolled in, and we were excited to see the beautiful beach glass, rocks, and shell gifts that Lake Erie would be delivering to us. Time passed by unnoticed as we slowly strolled down the long stretch of beach—both of us completely immersed in our mission.
As we neared the end of our walk, Jerry called out, “Hey, look up!”, and I saw that he was pointing to an incredible sight directly in front of us.
A bald eagle had just swooped down and seized a large fish that it had clutched in its talons! The eagle was so quick, athletic, and majestic that the whole scene felt surreal.
As the regal bird flew off with its catch, Jerry and I looked at each other, shaking our heads in amazement.
Had Jerry not looked up when he did, we would have missed that magnificent display of nature’s beauty!
It was then that I took a moment to notice the view in front of me.
The lake was cobalt blue, clear and glistening in the sunlight. The clouds were big and fluffy against the sky that was an even brighter shade of blue than the water. The view of Fairport Harbor in the distance was clear, and the lighthouse looked like it could have been in a scene on a vintage postcard.
I closed my eyes and felt the warm breeze on my face and took in the scent of the damp air from the water. As I listened to the sound of the waves as they hit the shore, seagulls chimed in, making it feel even more serene.
Aaaah, I love these sounds and the peaceful sense of calm they bring me!
Later, I thought about how if Jerry had not prompted me to look up, I would have missed seeing the eagle capture its breakfast and the view of the expansive lake and sky. I may have not even paused long enough to take in and appreciate the scents and sounds that I love.
I was so absorbed in my task at hand, that I could have easily missed the things that bring me the most pleasure—and that would be bananas, right?
If your life feels busy, busy, busy and you’re often caught up in the hustle and grind, I encourage you to reflect on this reminder from Mother Earth—stop, re-center, and savor the simple moments of life.
My friend! Let’s all take Jerry’s advice and look up from our “to-do” lists and relish in all that lights us up and brings us joy! Yes, let us pause and look up.
