When Your Dreams Start Working Against You

March 29, 2026 //  by Tracy Baranauskas//  Leave a Comment

Life Coaching Tip: What if the thing standing between you and your dreams isn’t a lack of ambition — but an “all or nothing” mindset? In this post, I explore how the “not enough” pattern shows up in sneaky ways, keeping even the most driven women stuck, overwhelmed, and questioning themselves. Whether you haven’t taken a single step yet or you’ve started and begun to doubt yourself, this one is for you. Small, consistent steps are not only enough — they’re the foundation everything else is built on.

You may have heard it said, “If your dreams don’t scare you, they’re not big enough.”

And for the most part, I agree.

As was the point of last week’s message, we’re not here to play small.

But here’s what I’ve noticed . . .

Sometimes, my clients use this belief against themselves. They turn it into one more reason they’re “not enough.”

Let’s say they have a vision for a new business that lights them up every time they think about it—but they’ve never taken a step in that direction. They believe they must blow everything up, quit their job, and go all in—80+ hours a week.

That feels like too much. And they still need to pay the bills.

So, they stay stuck.

Then, when I suggest they approach this with an and instead of an or, they bristle.

When I encourage them to start smaller and build toward the dream—maybe scaling back their job while laying the foundation of their business—their primal brain screams, “That’s not enough!”

They worry they’re somehow selling out.

But this isn’t settling. It’s strategy.

It’s creating momentum. It’s building self-trust and confidence. It’s becoming the version of oneself who can actually sustain big goals.

I did this myself when I lost 34 pounds a few years ago. I didn’t focus on the full number. I broke it into 10-pound milestones . . . and felt like a superstar every step of the way.

Another way this “not enough” pattern shows up is when my clients begin to question the very goals that once were their heart’s desire.

They stop trusting themselves.

They wonder:
Is this right?
Is this enough?

This came up for one of my incredible clients recently, and fortunately, she courageously shared it on our coaching call.

The original reason she began coaching was to feel more fulfilled. She wanted to live more intentionally and meaningfully—to move beyond the mundane and challenge herself.

So, she set her goals accordingly and has been doing powerful work—shifting out of hustling for worthiness and into gratitude and sufficiency.

But then her primal brain made an insidious move to sabotage her progress.

It whispered:
What if this isn’t enough?
What if I’m wrong about what I want?
What if the best years are behind me?

See how sneaky it is?

The primal brain is skillful in its trickery.

This showed up right after she acknowledged feeling more optimistic and at peace than she had in a long time. And because she wasn’t worrying as much . . . her brain panicked about what would fill that space.

That’s what the primal brain does. It tries to pull us back to what feels familiar to prevent change—even if what’s familiar is limiting. Sometimes it’s loud, but other times it’s subtle.

But together, we worked through it.

I gently reminded her:

These are not the only goals you’ll ever have.
It’s not the final destination.
This is the foundation.

And when you build that foundation on gratitude and sufficiency, you’ll experience your future goals with so much more depth, joy, and fulfillment.

She left the session grounded, clear, and back in her power.

So, sister, let me ask you . . .

Are you using “not enough” against yourself—so much so that you haven’t even taken a step toward your dreams?

Or have you started, only to then question yourself to the point that you feel overwhelmed, confused, and stuck?

If so, here’s what I want you to know:

You don’t need to prove your dreams are big enough.
You don’t need to go all in overnight.
And you don’t need to have it all figured out.

You just need to begin.

Start where you are.
Make it doable.
Let it count.

Because the truth is . . .

Big, expansive lives aren’t created through bold, terrifying leaps alone.

They’re also built through small, courageous steps—taken consistently, with intention.

And every one of those steps?

Is more than enough.

And so are you, my friend.
