What If You Started Today?

December 7, 2025 //  by Tracy Baranauskas//  Leave a Comment

Life Coaching Tip: December has a sneaky way of convincing us to pause our dreams and tell ourselves, “I’ll start in January.” We wait for a fresh calendar, a clean slate, or a burst of motivation that feels easier than choosing change right now. But real transformation doesn’t follow the calendar. It follows commitment. Sometimes the most powerful shifts happen when you decide not to wait, even in the middle of a busy, imperfect season. This is your reminder that you don’t need a new year to begin . . . you just need a decision.

______________________

Every December, I notice a pattern.

People wait.

They wait for the new year, the new planner, the clean slate, the magical burst of motivation that’s supposedly going to arrive on January 1st and whisk them into a brand-new life.

But here’s the truth I keep seeing, again and again:

A different life doesn’t begin “someday.” It begins the moment you decide to commit.

And lately, my clients have been proving that in the boldest ways.

One go-getter decided she was done saying she didn’t have time to work out. So, she committed—really committed—to waking up at 6 a.m. and heading straight to the gym. She didn’t wait for the perfect week, her schedule to calm down, or the holiday madness to pass. She drew a line in the sand and said: This begins now.

Another badass also made a courageous decision: she said “no” to spending the holidays with a family member who always brings chaos, criticism, and emotional exhaustion into the room. She chose peace over obligation. It’s a radical act of self-respect.

And then there’s the powerhouse who is networking like it’s her full-time job—reaching out, connecting, updating her materials, having conversations. She knows that when new positions open in January, she won’t be scrambling. She’ll be ready. Confident. Poised. Visible.

These aren’t small tweaks.
They’re identity-level shifts.
They’re moments where you stand up and say:

“I’m not waiting for a perfect time. I’m becoming the person I want to be—today.”

Of course, your shift doesn’t have to feel huge or high-stakes to matter. It could be carving out guilt-free time for yourself, starting a creative project you’ve been putting off, or scheduling an adventure that makes your heart happy. What matters is that it’s intentional—something that changes your day, your week, or even your energy in a meaningful way.

So, here’s my question for you, my friend:

What is one shift—bold or small—that would change the tone of your December?

Not after the holidays.
Not “once things calm down.”
Not when the stars align.

Now.

Maybe it’s saying no.
Maybe it’s saying yes.
Maybe it’s asking for help, going to bed earlier, cleaning out a corner of your home, having an honest conversation, or taking the first step toward a long-held dream.

Whatever it is . . . choose it.

Future You will be so grateful you did!
