Powering Up vs. Powering Through

April 17, 2025 //  by Tracy Baranauskas//  Leave a Comment

Life Coaching Tip: When you power up instead of powering through, you tap into a whole new level of strength and expansion. You find that you have more than enough energy to take on big tasks and overcome life’s challenges—you realize that your capacity is unlimited. Yes, my friend, you become unstoppable!

Last week, I shared the story of a hike I recently took with my family in the Colorado Rockies and how empowering it felt when we made the hellbent decision to power up and go for our goal destination rather than turning back when things got tough.

During that hike, my daughter Marissa and I talked about the magnificent things people can accomplish when they get in the right mindset and commit.

Marissa and her husband, Brian, are both athletes and adventure-seekers, and I’m constantly blown away by the challenges they take on. For instance, back in February, they ran their first 50K race in Phoenix, Arizona—and both proudly slayed it!

Afterwards, Marissa sent me a picture of her scraped-up knees that she’d banged on the rocky terrain, and she noted:

“The first 20 miles were fun, but I definitely hit the wall after 23 and had to walk a bit. Also, I fell on the rocks—but nothing too bad! We’re both sore but feeling good!”

I could feel it in her message: there’s nothing quite like the rush of rising up after a fall and conquering the challenge. Total badassery!

As we hiked, Marissa told me about some of the Ultra 100-mile endurance marathons she’s watched her friends complete in, and we talked about the mental stamina required to keep going when your body is screaming at you to stop.

Then we shifted the conversation to other kinds of human resiliency—the emotional and intellectual kind. The kind that requires people to stretch their capacity far beyond what they, or anyone else, might believe is possible.

That kind of strength also comes from a powerful mindset—one that cultivates courage, determination, and grit.

On the flight home, I kept thinking about this idea—and about my clients, past and present, who have done just that: stretched themselves in extraordinary ways. And every time, it’s their mindset that’s made the difference.

I specifically thought of my client, Mary, who was making a major move that weekend—literally. Mary, a busy executive with a demanding schedule, packed up her home of 28 years and prepared to move to a new community a few hours away in a matter of months. And she did this almost entirely on her own.

Mary didn’t quite realize how physically, emotionally, and mentally challenging it would be—until she was in the thick of it. But she powered herself up with inspiring thoughts, one step at a time.

Mary laughed as she shared with our Shine On group how she accidentally bumped into her Jen Sincero audio button mid-move, and it blurted out:

“You can dooo it!”

In that moment, it was precisely the boost she needed!

And now? Mary is cozying up in her new nest and enjoying the fruits of her labor!

Then, I thought of Chris, who is pictured above. Chris set a goal to walk a 5K the weekend after we returned. And she did exactly that, as some of the members of her Shine On group and I walked along with her, cheering her on!

This was a major milestone for Chris, who’s been recovering from back surgery and rebuilding her strength by hitting the gym daily—which has also been an incredible accomplishment for her!

I’ll never forget the moment she scaled the final hill and threw her arms up in triumph—her Shine Sisters applauding her efforts. It was a beautiful reminder of the strength and resilience that lives in all of us.

And finally, I thought of Michelle. A spirited entrepreneur who made the audacious decision to go all in on her business a few years back. Now in her second Shine On round, Michelle has bravely grown and stretched—both personally and professionally—by fully immersing herself in the work.

I’ve watched her take bold steps forward, commit, and then re-commit whenever she’s gone off course—over and over again. Michelle’s tenacity and dedication to the process has helped her go from feeling exhausted and overwhelmed to being the confident owner of a profitable business that energizes and fulfills her.

So, what’s the difference between people who light up their souls by having a blast accomplishing extraordinary things and feeling  alive in their courage—and those who suffer through life miserably pushing themselves out of obligation or settling for mediocrity?

The answer may surprise you.

The first group chooses to power up.

The second? They’re stuck powering through.

This is especially true for women who’ve absorbed the message—loud and clear from the patriarchy—that we’re “not enough.” So, we hustle to prove our worth, piling on more and more until we’re utterly depleted.

Powering through might get you to the finish line, but it often leaves you feeling resentful, unfilled, and exhausted. It’s fueled by lack—by the belief that we must do more to be more.

And it slowly drains our emotional, mental, and physical capacity, keeping us trapped in the cycle of “not enough.”

But when you learn to power up? You tap into a whole new level of strength and expansion. You find that you have more than enough energy to take on big tasks and overcome life’s challenges—because you operate from a mindset of sufficiency and abundance.

You understand that your capacity is unlimited.

You become unstoppable.

So, my friend, where do you see yourself right now?

Are you powering through your days—running on fumes, pushing through obligation, and wondering when it’s ever going to feel like enough?

Or are you ready to power up and tap into the strength that’s already inside you?

If the answer is yes, I invite you to begin today. Start by choosing one thought—just one—that lights you up. One belief that reminds you of who you really are and what you’re capable of.

Write it down. Say it out loud. Feel into it.

Then, keep going!

Because this is how it starts: with a single, soul-affirming choice to believe in yourself.

And from there? You build momentum. You expand your capacity. You step into a life that feels as powerful and vibrant as you truly are.

Next week, I’ll be back to share some of my favorite power-up thoughts—the ones I return to when I need a boost, a shift, or a soul spark.

Until then, keep powering up and shine on, mama!
